What’s Up with Bezel-less Smartphones? 5 Things to Know

With the release of the iPhone X, smartphone screens entered a new era. Known as bezel-less screens, the viewing surface now goes edge to edge without a frame. The frame, called a bezel, once limited the size of the screen and gave designers a problem when it came to increasing screen size without increasing the smartphone’s size. But the new iPhone X, along with some Androids, solved the problem while still giving users the biggest screen possible. Discover the five things you need to know about bezel-less smartphones.

The Home Button Is Absent

To make room for the new screen, Apple eliminated the home button from the iPhone. Don’t despair: The electronic components fit within a small notch at the top of the screen.

The iPhone X still lets you take selfies and perform all the functions you’re used to doing. As technology advanced and the components resized, the redesign left more room for increasing the screen size.

You Get an Edge-to-Edge Viewing Experience

The bezel-based phones featured minimized components that allowed items to fit into a smaller, almost finger-sized area. Users had access to a larger surface area for viewing while still retaining common functions.

With the new phone screen design, you get an edge-to-edge screen to easily read text messages, view pictures, or watch videos. When you use the iPhone X on T-Mobile’s lightning-fast network, for example, you’ll get a video experience that rivals television quality, all on the nation’s largest 4G LTE network. The iPhone X screen is 5.8 inches while the larger handset for the iPhone 8 Plus screen is only 5.5 inches because of the bezel.

Advancing Technology Features Impact User Experience

For some time, improving the insides of the smartphone took priority over outward design changes. However, recent advances allowed phone manufacturers to add functions, increase memory caches, and create longer lasting batteries. Naturally, phone design was the next step.

In order to give the user a better experience, engineers looked at reducing the bezel to virtually nothing. Now users get a clean and clear edge-to-edge screen with the same capabilities as previous phones.

New Screens Give Rise to New Tech Innovations

The most obvious benefit of these new screens is that you have more space to more easily view photo and video content. By enlarging the screen on its iPhone X, for example, Apple eliminated the fingerprint sensor and replaced it with facial recognition software which allows the front-facing camera to verify your identify and unlock the phone. As more manufacturers go with bezel-less smartphones, facial recognition software will become the norm.

The iPhone’s notch at the top of the screen may be slightly awkward for some users. The sensors, speakers, camera, and other elements fit into the little notch. As a result of the larger screen, certain web apps needed reworking. Without changes, the bezel-less screens created a white frame on webpages and apps, decreasing the viewing area.

Regardless of this problem, having a larger screen without increasing the phone size is popular with users. Already, alternatives for phones without the notch are available. Some phones have components on the side of the phone, giving users an unblemished edge-to-edge screen. Some smartphones with OLED allow the screen to go over the edge of the phone. The design doesn’t improve the visual area, but it does look cool.

Android Is Taking Its Cues from Apple

Bezel-less phones are the latest development for smartphones. As Apple makes its changes, so do other phone manufacturers. Androids already offer the bezel-less screen and other new features that mirror the improvements from Apple.

Wireless charging is growing in both availability and popularity. The new iPhone X has wireless charging capabilities, and many Androids offer that feature as well. Some new phones also understand gesture-based signals for controlling functions. Swiping the screen may soon be a motion of the past as new phones use recognition software for responding to your hand movements instead. As technology develops, the consumer is the ultimate winner. From bezel-less phones to whatever the future holds, smartphones remain a must-have accessory for everyone.
