Instagram accused of copying TikTok as IG’s user interface, has undergone some changes, making the user experience nearly identical to the one on TikTok. First, it was the launch of Reels in the US in 2020, right when TikTok’s numbers began racking up. Now a complete transformation of the user interface.

One of the first things a user will notice is that Instagram no longer supports infinite scrolling. Instead, opt for an item-by-item flipping style that covers the entire screen. This eventually forces you to interact with the content displayed.

Previously, a user could choose which posts received their attention. But, this version ensures that all posts, including unwanted sponsored advertisements, receive some engagement. So the algorithm is now making decisions for you.

Mute and Unmute Option on Instagram

Users can no longer mute a reel (a short video) by simply tapping on the screen, as they previously could. This inconvenience forces you to interact with the content once more if only for the time it takes to mute it.

Suggested Posts

Another strategy they’ve used involves “suggested” posts. They were also present in the previous interface. However, the lack of a “suggested for you” tag at the top makes it more difficult for users to determine whether this is a post from a friend or a stranger.

What does this have to do with TikTok?

TikTok’s ‘item-by-item flipping’ style differentiated it from most other social media platforms. Such an interface was designed to show as much algorithmically targeted video content as possible – something that is soon to become synonymous with Instagram with the launch of the recent updates.

New User Interface Is Unpopular Among Users

Users have complained that their feeds are no longer dominated by posts from their friends but are instead littered with advertisements and other sponsored content. In 2018, Snapchat’s stock dropped by 8% after Kylie Jenner tweeted that she no longer used the app following its redesign. At the time, the total loss was more than $1 billion. This is what has been dubbed the “Kylie Jenner effect.”

On July 25, Kylie Jenner, the app’s second most followed person, shared another user’s post on her Instagram Stories with the caption, “Make Instagram Instagram again.” (Stop attempting to be TikTok; all I want to see are cute photos of my friends.) Everyone’s best wishes.” Kim Kardashian (her sister) also shared the same post, which received over 1.1 million likes.

The post received 1.1 million likes, indicating that Instagram’s millions of users are catching on to Instagram’s seemingly sly tactics to overtake their competitors by becoming more like them. At the moment, it is unclear whether the disapproval of popular social media stars will influence Instagram’s decision to proceed with the full transformation of Instagram.
